StudyAbroad: Nearly 9 in 10 companies plan to hire MBA graduates, says GMAC survey

Globally, 86% of companies plan to hire recent MBA graduates this year, up from 79% that hired them last year, according to a new employer survey report from the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The survey shows that corporate hiring plans for this year point to robust employment opportunities for graduates of MBA and business master's programs. 

Demand for these MBA graduates is strongest in the United States and Asia-Pacific, where 9 in 10 companies plan to hire these candidates, the survey report said. 

"Despite the political uncertainty about the status of immigration and work visas in the United States and other parts of the world, companies are keen to hire graduates from this year's MBA and business master's programs, including international candidates," said Sangeet Chowfla, GMAC president, and CEO. "This signifies the value these programs create for students and the vital role their skill sets bring employers." 

At the time GMAC conducted the Corporate Recruiters Survey in early 2017, respondents in Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the United States declared their companies are staying the course with plans to hire international graduate business candidates. Overall, 59% of the survey respondents plan to hire or are willing to hire MBA and business master's graduates requiring legal documentation — a gain of seven percentage points from 2016. 

Most US companies (55%) either plan to hire (28%) or are open to hiring (27%) an international candidate in 2017 — up from 49% that had such plans last year. The technology industry in the US is the most likely to hire international business graduates this year. Half of US tech firms (50%) plan to hire such candidates in 2017—up from 27% that planned to hire them last year. 

The survey shows that data analytics expertise continues to be in high demand, and 69% of employers plan to place recent graduate business school hires into data analytics roles in 2017, just trailing marketing, business development, and finance roles — each with 71%. 

GMAC conducted the 16th annual Corporate Recruiters Survey in February and March 2017 together with survey partners EFMD and MBA Career Services & Employer Alliance (MBA CSEA), in association with 97 participating graduate business schools. 

The survey findings are based on responses from 959 employers representing more than 628 companies in 51 countries worldwide. Two additional organizations, CEMS and RelishMBA, assisted with recruitment of survey participants.

Drop in US student visas to Indians

The reason for this fall is stricter rules mandated by the Trump government. The consular officials have to now ensure that students planned to return to their countries after finishing their studies.

The United States has seen a massive decline of 28 percent in the number of student visa allotted to the Indian students in 2017, according to new state department data. In 2016-17, the US issued 47,302 visas to the Indian students while 65,257 visas were released in the fiscal ended September 30, 2016.

As per a Wall Street Journal’s report, the reason for this fall is stricter rules mandated by the Trump government. The consular officials have to now ensure that students planned to return to their countries after finishing their studies. Chinese students, highest to seek admission in the US, have witnessed drastic fall with only 1,16,109 students were given the visa in 2016-17 as compared to 1,52, 120 in 2015-16. Overall, there were about 78,000 fewer visas issued in 2017 in comparison with 2016 for students. Without China, the overall number fell by 13 percent.

After China and India, US receives maximum students from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico and Brazil.

As per the 2016 Open Doors report, a record 165,918 Indians were studying in the US during 2015-16, making India the second leading country of origin among international students in the US. The Indian students contribute more than $5.5 billion to the American economy.

More Students Keen To Study MBA Abroad

Amid the rising popularity of an international MBA tag, global changes are shaping the dynamics of where students are flying.

A survey reveals that the percentage of non-US citizens who say they are now less likely to study in the land of the free has grown to 43% in April 2017 from 35% in November 2016. Similarly, a country-level analysis has revealed that Indian candidates are negatively influenced by the Brexit vote, with 58% reporting that it has made them less likely to study in the UK.

Countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany and New Zealand seem to be gaining from the waning sentiment towards the top two education destinations due to the closed climate.

A recent Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) survey states that nearly three of five prospective business school students (59%) intend to apply for programmes outside their home country, up from 44% in 2009.

Most study abroad to receive a higher quality education (63% of the respondents), to increase their chances of securing international employment (58%), and to expand their international connections (51%).

"Since November 2016, a growing share of international candidates say they are now less likely to pursue a graduate business degree in the US due to the presidential election results," states the survey.

A third (34%) of the candidates who prefer to study outside their country of citizenship intend to seek employment in the country where they prefer to attend school. Moreover, fresh research also shows that three out of four B-school aspirants are holding a prior master's degree.
