StudyAbroad:Auckland University is New Zealand's top university to gain in 2018 QS world university rankings

StudyAbroad: Five universities gained in the annual QS World University Rankings released on Thursday, with all but Auckland University of Technology (AUT) among the top 350.

Auckland University was New Zealand's top-placed provider at 82nd worldwide, sliding back one spot on last year's rankings.

The University of Canterbury maintained its 214th place ranking and AUT remained in the 441-450 place bracket.

Internationally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) held its first place spot for the sixth year running, followed by Stanford and Harvard universities. English academic strongholds Cambridge and Oxford were fifth and sixth place respectively after California Institute of Technology (4th).

New Zealand universities performed well in research outputs – Waikato ranked 133rd, Otago 174th, and Canterbury 178th. The exception was Lincoln University, which featured among the top 200 universities globally in that measure.

The fourteenth annual QS ranking considered institutions' reputations as employers, their academic reputation and international staff and student numbers.

Universities New Zealand executive director Chris Whelan said domestic institutions did well in research and international connections.

"Despite really tight funding conditions, New Zealand universities have done well because we know how to cater to the rankings and they play to our strengths.

"That all of our universities are in the top 450 is truly impressive; no other country in the world can boast that."

Whelan said good rankings helped attract international staff. While about 80 percent of international students considered rankings when deciding to study here, they were not the main driver.

QS research director Ben Sowter applauded New Zealand's rankings "especially considering that it competes with far more populous and richer countries".

Study Abroad Trend Revile By PTE Survey

In a recent study conducted by Pearson for Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, the computer-based test of English proficiency for immigration and study abroad, Business Management and Information Technology (IT) emerged as the top two courses preferred by students of Maharashtra to study abroad.

The study of PTE Academic test takers reveals that 29.9 per cent students going abroad prefer a course in Business Management followed by Information Technology / Computer Sciences (17 per cent) and Engineering (14.8 per cent) to explore as a career avenue.

While the students continue to prefer these standard courses, there has been an interesting shift towards newer courses such as tourism and hospitality (6.8 per cent). Students are going for management courses in finance, marketing, retail and hotel industry. Furthermore, 71.5 per cent of these students apply for post-graduate courses while only 10.5 per cent opt to pursue graduate courses.

Globally, PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of academic programs in the US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

The study also reveals that the students are applying across various countries, however, the top two choices for them is Australia and New Zealand. Around 47.1 per cent of applicants from Maharashtra have a strong preference to study in Australian universities followed by New Zealand at 20.2 per cent.

The PTE Academic scores are accepted when applying to migrate to Australia and New Zealand. Most recently it was accepted by Engineers Australia for migration skills assessment purposes.

France launched a technology visa on Thursday which aims to attract international talent, with newly-elected President Emmanuel Macron talking about the need to strip out regulation to become a "country of unicorns".

Speaking at the Viva Tech conference in Paris, France, Macron outlined how his government would slash complex regulation, make it easier for foreign talent to work, and support start-ups with money, in order to create world-leading companies.

The visa is open to startup founders, employees and investors and is a fast-track procedure to obtain a residence permit in France known as the "Talent Passport". It's valid for four years and extended to immediate family members.

"I want France to attract new entrepreneurs, new researchers, and be the nation for innovation and startups," Macron told CNBC on the sidelines of the event, prior to the announcement.

​Macron said that French talent often leaves the country because the environment is not attractive enough. The key is training and keeping talent in the country.

"The bet of the future for us is to carry on educating our talents, taking our students to the highest levels of academic success. We must defend our educational model, we must help our students go further," Macron said.

Another proposal put forward by Macron was a European Venture Fund that can support start-ups as they grow. And he spoke about the need for the Digital Single Market – a European Commission policy that aims to harmonize rules from streaming services to roaming charges.

Venture capital investment in France hit $1.6 billion in 2016, a steady level from the $1.7 billion the year before. It still lags the likes of Germany and the U.K. but has seen a lot of investors jump into the market. It also boasts its fair share of unicorns such as long-distance ride sharing company BlaBlaCar.

No more talking to neighbours: Millennials prefer online chats over face-to-face conversations

Millennials are preferring to chat online instead of face-to-face conversations, according to a study conducted by Cancer Research UK. Around 44 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds expressed that they felt more comfortable using social media, messaging apps and online mode to chat with people they didn't personally know, and only 37 percent felt comfortable speaking face to face.

Studies show that young adults with increased social media use tend to feel more socially isolated when compared to those who use it less. While social media can be beneficial in building up contacts, the social isolation that goes along with restricting conversations to the online mode has been long associated with increased mortality, the research said.

The research also pointed out that young individuals are increasingly avoiding face-to-face conversations in other spheres of their lives. Young adults between 18 to 24 are twenty times more likely to never speak to their neighbours, than those aged 55 and over. And around 27 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds have never spoken to someone they didn't know on public transport such as buses and trains- which is roughly five times more than the rate for those aged 55 and over. Nearly half (47 percent) said they prefer to listen to music on their headphones instead.

"This research shows an increasing generational divide between how millennials and baby boomers prefer to communicate. While it is no surprise that young people are embracing new ways to chat, and there are supportive communities online, it is important they don’t lose the art of talking to the people around them," Dr Rebecca Beeken, a behavioural scientist at the University of Leeds, said. Studying at home – in your own city, your own state, even your own country - is so yesterday. These days, if you want to make the most of your investment in further education, from first degree to top drawer MBA program, you need to study abroad.

A new study released by the Institute of International Education’s Center for Academic Mobility Research and Impact reveals positive impact for study abroad participants in the job market post-graduation. Participating in study abroad is known to increase global competence, including language skills and cultural literacy. However, there have previously been no measurable basis to determine what is needed to be globally competent and what should be taught in study abroad programs.

The study found that study abroad increased a number of skills, including cognition, curiosity, flexibility, adaptability, confidence, self-awareness, intercultural skills, interpersonal skills, communication, problem solving, language, tolerance, teamwork, leadership skills, and work ethic.

Findings

• Study abroad was seen to increase career possibilities due to interviewees having a broader understanding of career possibilities and more confidence to pursue them.
• The skills gained through study abroad had long-term impacts on progression and promotion. Interviewees answered that study-abroad helped contribute to a job offer, to skill development in jobs, and to be promoted to management-level positions where communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to understand and work with others were important.
• Long periods of study abroad had a high impact on subsequent job offers and the development of skills, while short-term programs were effective in developing teamwork skills. This is possibly because short-term programs tend to be more structured and team-oriented than longer term programs, where independent study is more common.
• STEM majors highly value the gains made in skills outside of their majors during study abroad. Those in these fields said that study abroad programs were less diverse than regular programs, and that they were able to develop more “soft” skills that other programs in their fields lacked.
• Choosing a less familiar destination was positively associated with skill development and sense of career impact.
• Student intentionality and highly structured programs contribute to skill development.
• The conclusion of the study states, “Across U.S. higher education, there is a strong emphasis on preparing U.S. students to secure jobs after graduation

in order to ensure their own economic prosperity and to contribute to the economic development of their communities, states, and the country as a whole. Study abroad provides a unique opportunity for students to gain work-related skills in a global context. This study has found that study abroad contributes to the development of transformable skills and positive employment gains in different ways depending on program characteristics, study destinations, and the intentionality of students in leveraging study abroad experiences for employment. Most notably, the ability to understand differences between cultures and individuals emerged as a skill that contributes to individuals’ career progression. Within the context of today’s global economy, most students will move into jobs where they work for or do business with international companies, as well as work with diverse colleagues. Accordingly, the work-related skills gained through study abroad can be powerful tools for career success.”

StudyAbroad: Indian Engineering college’s move to hike fees by 250%

StudyAbroad: Students have opposed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute’s (VJTI) decision to increase the fees for post-graduation courses by 150% to 250%.

The autonomous engineering institute’s board of governors recommended the fee hike, which has been approved. “All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stopped funding our PG courses from 2008. All these years, we were hoping to receive some aid from the state or Centre, but to no avail. So we decided to increase the fees to keep these courses running,” said Dhiren Patel, director of the Institute.

VJTI is a University of Mumbai- affiliated college which was granted autonomy in 2004. It gets financial aid from the state for UG courses. Members of Nationalist Student Congress (NCS), the student wing of NCP, said the annual fees for MTech (aided section) may be increased from Rs. 23,665 to Rs. 83,734 — a hike of 253%. Those who have a sponsor may have to pay Rs. 93,734 from the current annual fees of Rs38,565. Similarly, the fees for pursuing PhD may rise from Rs. 26,092 to Rs. 83,954 for non-sponsored students and from Rs. 41,092 to Rs. 1,08,954 for sponsored students.

“Students are being victimized for a few crores. It seems that the government doesn’t want them to pursue higher education,” said Amol Matele, President, NSC.

Court has stayed release of list; officials confident of the State government winning case against NEET

The delay in the release of merit list for MBBS/BDS by the State government has only led to more confusion. Students who have cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test remain uncertain about their prospects in the State.

The uncertainty is higher for students from other boards who have scored well in NEET and are hoping for a seat in the State government-run colleges through the All India Quota.

The last date to lock preferences under the All India Quota for seats under the 15% reservation ended on July 11. Counseling for these seats is expected to start from July 13.

It is in this situation that the court has stayed the declaration of merit list, which was expected on July 14.

The parents of a student, who had cleared NEET with over 300 marks, are still hoping that the State government would stick to its schedule and release the merit list.

Several options open

K. Bhagavathi, a CBSE student who has cleared NEET, said he had hoped to get into a government college. “I did not think the State Board students would get good scores in NEET.

“But there are many who have scored over 600 so I don’t stand a chance. Two of my friends who have scored better than me and have qualified under the unreserved category have other plans. One of them has applied for deemed university and another has taken a year off to prepare for NEET,” he said.

Several organizations continuing their protest against NEET has not helped matters.

A senior official of the State government, however, said the government would win the case against the imposition of NEET this year as Tamil Nadu had not followed in the footsteps of Gujarat, which had adopted the Central government recommended syllabus three months prior to NEET.

Counselling put off

The second phase of counseling for admission to undergraduate courses offered by the constituent and affiliated colleges of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has been postponed till the medical and engineering admissions are completed.

S. Mahimairaja, Dean, Agriculture, and Chairman - Admissions, said that after the first phase counseling, which ended on June 24, there were just three vacancies in the constituent colleges and 210 vacancies in the affiliated colleges. However, there were a lot of dropouts in the last two or three weeks.

“In order to avoid further dropouts, we are waiting for the medical counseling to get over,” he said.

As studying medicine in India gets tougher due to limited seats and high capitation fee, a number of medical aspirants check out the options abroad to become qualified doctors. Although taking the overseas route in the healthcare industry has been in prevalence for quite some time, over the past few years there has been an average increase of about 10-15 percent increase in the number of students going abroad for studying medicine.

New Zealand sees university rankings strengthened

June 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior education official on Thursday welcomed the news that five of New Zealand's eight universities have improved their ranking in the annual Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.

"These results are positive news for our world-class tertiary education system, with all eight of our universities ranked in the top 450 for the second year running," Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Paul Goldsmith said in a statement.

First published in 2005, the QS ranking examines universities across areas such as reputation, teaching, research, and internationalization to determine an overall ranking for over 900 universities.

"This reflects the steady progress we are constantly making to raise the quality of our universities, and the investments into high-quality research by the government," Goldsmith said.
Five of the eight New Zealand universities improved their ranking from last year, two remained unchanged, and one dropped a single place. All eight New Zealand universities remain ranked inside the top 450.

Among them, the University of Canterbury ranks 214, unchanged from last year; Lincoln University ranks 319, up 24 places from last year;

Goldsmith said the government is committed to investing in quality tertiary education, with a 132.1 million-NZ dollar (95.2 million-U.S. dollar) investment in tertiary education through Budget 2017.

StudyinDubai:The International Centre for Culinary Arts Dubai (ICCA Dubai) hopes to increase the number of young chefs it offers a culinary scholarship to, as part of its AED 1 Million Continuing Education Award.

The center recently hosted the graduation program of 24 young chefs who were selected to be part of the AED 1 Million Continuing Education Award – the first of its kind annual 100% Culinary Scholarship Programme by ICCA Dubai.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cuthbert said: “We are here to celebrate the 24 young people who have worked for the last 52 weeks to complete a certification which brings hope and gives them an opportunity to change their lives.

“In this market, we talk about succession planning, so it fills me with great pride to be involved with something like this.”

He said the program will continue next year, and Micheel and ICCA Dubai director and CEO Sunjeh Raja revealed that they hope to double the number of chefs taking the program in its second iteration to 52.

The idea for the program was born a decade ago, but it was only in 2014 when both Raja and Micheel were able to realize their dream.

“When Sunjeh was in the old school in Satwa, I said the school was too expensive. It was great but those who really need schools cannot afford them. My dream was to get an education for the guys who have no money to pay for this,” he said.

Raja approached Micheel two years ago saying the infrastructure was in place, and after planning out logistics with Cuthbert, the program was launched in collaboration with Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG), WorldChefs and the City & Guilds London.

“It is great to be here and to see what they have achieved – it’s fantastic. I’m motivated to go double next year,” added Micheel, who said chefs in the UAE who gave their time to train the young students every week is why the program was a success.

The graduates of the class of 2016 included young chefs from JW Marriott Marquis, Ritz-Carlton, Shakespeare & Co, Shangri-La, Emirates Flight Catering, The Address, Madinat Jumeirah, Fairmont, Atlantis The Palm, JA Resorts, Marriott Courtyard, Radisson Blu, Media One, and Unilever amongst others.

The Guardian’s guide is partly based on student feedback. Coventry University is ranked top in England for its teaching quality score and is third in the UK for the percentage of final-year students satisfied with feedback and assessment by lecturers.

The ranking puts Coventry ahead of many Russell Group universities.

Last month’s Complete University Guide also ranked Coventry as the top new university.

Earlier this month Coventry University made the Times Higher Education’s (THE) latest league table of the best 200 institutions globally under 50 years old.

The university also ranks as number one in the UK for courses in film production and photography and is in the country’s top two for its courses in mechanical engineering and hospitality, event management and tourism categories.

Coventry is also in the UK’s top 10 for courses in economics (5th), sports science (8th), mathematics (8th), journalism (9th) and civil engineering (10th) – with a further ten subject area rankings featuring Coventry in the top 20 overall.

The UK is the best place in the world for top “young” universities, according to the new rankings.

A total of 27 UK institutions made the cut - more than any other nation, including Australia, which had 23 universities included, and France which took third place with 16 inclusions.

In May 2016 Coventry University was declared the best modern university in the UK.

Developers Crosslane Group said its interest in the city was due to the fact Coventry University is currently the fastest growing university in the UK by student enrolment.
