Career in Sports Management

Career in Sports Management

So many people grow up wanting to be professional athletes. Though only a tiny fraction is able to realize that dream, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have a career in sports. There are myriad careers in sports management, allowing those of us without a 90-mph fastball or a 42-inch vertical leap to work around the games we love.

Sports management includes all aspects of business, from the administration of finances to facilities management to the business aspects of sports teams, leagues, and establishments. With the growing popularity of the professional league sports such as  BPL (Barclays Premier League) and what followed is the most successful and profitable league in India ($3 billion Indian Premier League) and it embarked the beginning of a new phase in Indian Sports Federation. After the recent success of ISL (Indian Soccer League), Indian Kabaddi League, Indian Tennis League, Indian Badminton League, Hero Hockey League and this has opened the opportunity for a new career path in the Sports Management.

Sports Management Careers Path

Sports Management Careers: Salary Expectations

With many years of experience and solid networking, Sports manages can earn astronomical salaries in professional leagues–perhaps not quite as much as the stars of the team, but close, in some cases.

Study abroad: Campaign Aim to double share of UK students studying abroad

Picture
Study In UK: New target aims for 13.2 percent of students to undertake international placements by 2020

The new target forms the second phase of the organization’s UK Strategy for Outward Mobility, which since 2013 has aimed to increase the share of students who have an international experience.

Just 6.6 percent of full-time undergraduates in the UK undertook international placements during their degree in 2014. The campaign seeks to increase this figure to 13.2 percent by 2020 in order to “create a new generation of global graduates and a higher education culture in which international opportunities are an aspiration for all students.

Head of outward mobilities programmes at UUKi, said that while the UK has seen visible growth in outward student mobility, progress has been “slow” and UK students “still have low levels of involvement in study abroad compared [with their] counterparts overseas”.

The US-based Institute for International Education launched its Generation Study Abroad programme in 2014, which aims to more than double the number of US students studying abroad to 600,000 per year by the end of the decade. The latest available data show that this figure reached 313,415 in 2014-15, a 2.9 per cent rise since the previous year.

Germany also has a goal for half its student body to spend time abroad by 2020.

One priority for the UK campaign will be to increase mobility for disadvantaged students, who are currently under-represented in this regard.

UUKi’s Gone International: Mobility Works report, published in March, found that the potential benefits of outward mobility can be greater for disadvantaged students than for other types of students.

On average, graduates from more disadvantaged backgrounds who were mobile during their degree earned 6.1 percent more than their peers six months after graduation, while mobile black graduates were 70 percent less likely to be unemployed than their non-mobile peers.

France to Attract 10,000 Indian Students By 2020

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault recently visited Bangalore that time they announced a plan to attract 10,000 Indian students to French institutions by 2020, more than doubling the current population of Indian students. In the press, French Foreign Minister said,“In 2016, 4,000 Indian students went to France.  This is 50 times more than that of 20 years ago.  But it’s still insufficient in terms of the quality of the relationship between the two countries.”

Why the push?France wants to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.  According to the French president and Indian prime minister, both agree that higher education and student exchange programs would continue to strengthen the partnerships between the two countries.  Annual trade between France and India reaches around $8.6 billion.

On the trip, French Foreign Minister also announced the Bangalore chapter of the France Alumni, an online, multilingual digital network to connect international students who have studied at French institutions.

The hope?  To encourage Indian students who have studied in France to work together. French Foreign Minister acknowledged that international student mobility is at its highest level.  He said, “4 million students studied in foreign countries in 2012.  Around the world, international student mobility has become a major issue.  This mobility is a guarantee of freedom.”  He predicted that international student mobility could reach 8 million by 2020—and he wants France and India to continue to have mutually respectful relationships, especially when it comes to higher education.

Just 1L new jobs (0.5%) added in 8 key non-farm sectors.

Just over 1 lakh jobs were added between April 1 and October 1 last year in eight key non-farm sectors of the economy ranging from manufacturing and construction to IT BPO, education and health, according to a recent government report.

Considering that these eight sectors together employ over 2crore workers, the net addition of new jobs amounts to a mere half a per cent of the total. So, it's bad news for the economy and another red flag for the government.

The third quarterly employment report, which was revamped by the government last year with new sectors included and a larger sample size of over 10,000 establishments. The first report, released last year, set the baseline of employment as on April 2016.The report shows that employment is not only inching up at a painfully slow pace but also that aggregate figures hide more severe upheavals. For instance, almost three quarters of 1.09 lakh new jobs added are confined to two sectors -education and health, which added 82,000 new jobs. But the most worrying thing is manufacturing jobs grew by just 12,000 in six months -a rise of 0.1%. This sector, the backbone of the non-farm economy , employs nearly 50% of workers in the selected eight sectors.

It has been the focus of the `Make in India' and `Skill India' programmes, as also of efforts to woo FDI. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP), released monthly by the government, confirms this dire situation with a rise of a only 1% between January 2015 and January 2017.

According to latest data from the RBI, gross bank credit to industries increasing by a mere 0.3%. This includes credit disbursals to micro, small, medium and large industries and together makes up nearly 40% of all non-food credit.

The meagre increase in credit to industry is a symptom of the flagging growth in manufacturing, which is also reflected in lack of job growth.

National income and expenditure released by the government last month.
Growth in investment in fixed capital, known as gross fixed capital formation, dipped by a factor of 10 between 2015-16 and 2016-17, from 6.1% to a shocking 0.6% in 2016-17.

This implies that the corporate sector is not investing in new production arrangements.

In India lack of job growth in recent year. Opportunities are less and employee number are high.

MBA in India vs. MBA abroad

A large number of bachelor degree students and almost all employed mid-level executives are in a run for an MBA degree. Students have option to pursue MBA through full-time, part-time, distant and of late online mode. While fresh graduates usually go for full-time course; part-time, distant and online courses are favored by employed executives. They compare options in terms of quality of education, experience, cost, placement, duration, flexibility etc. However the scenario is bit different for fresh graduates aspiring to pursue full-time MBA.

According to Mr. Aslam Shaikh of Aliff Overseas Consultants, full time MBA students often get confused whether to study in India or go abroad. He elaborated and compared between MBA in India and MBA abroad, for students to avoid confusion and get a clear picture. He put into perspective 5 major points, Admission, Duration, Quality, Exposure and Cost.

We will first consider admission into a MBA program. In India students for full-time MBA has to go through a series of admission and screening test to get admission into a MBA program. On the other hand it’s just a single test to qualify for a MBA program. Secondly, Indian MBA programs are 2 years in duration whereas MBA programs abroad ranges between 1 and 2 years in duration.

Speaking of the quality of studies, Mr. Shaikh said, comparatively Indian MBA colleges are decades behind their counterparts abroad. Curriculums in Indian colleges have not been changed since long and miss on the latest developments or demands of the industry. Colleges abroad constantly update their curriculums and align their courses with industry needs.

Fourth most important point according to MR. Shaikh is that students enrolled into foreign universities experience a diverse culture, and global exposure through international internships.Since the focus of the entire MBA curriculum abroad is current industry requirements, so they give stress on acquiring hands-on industry experience through internships. MBA colleges abroad often invites top officials from big international companies as visiting faculties to conduct classes and shares their experience with students.

Mr. Shaikh sighted a practical example “It’s something similar to a big Indian corporate who never tries to find a candidate abroad; and an international company will not search for potential candidate in India. You are always a couple of steps ahead with study abroad programs.”Work experience in an international company, undeniably adds prestige and profile to a student’s Resume. Moreover you stand a chance against your international peers to bag an international job.

Mr. Shaikh concluded with the most important point in this debate by comparing the cost. “Students and parents alike live with the myth that studying abroad is expensive and will cost them a fortune. It’s time to come out of such thinking and compare the cost vis-à-vis. Students and parents will get surprised, it’s the same or in some case may be even less expensive to study MBA abroad.” Mr. Shaikh headed Aliff overseas, a premier study abroad consultant based in Mumbai, offers students with study abroad at Indian cost options. An average Indian student spends around 6 to 15 lakhs for MBA in India; studying MBA abroad costs something in between 6-18 lakhs.

International MBA students get to cover a part of their expenses through part-time jobs, which you cannot do in India. They also get stay back options to find jobs in foreign countries and generally land up working for good international companies.

3 Ways International Students Can Find a Mentor in College

Coming to a new country to study abroad is not as easy as it might sound.

Besides understanding the culture of a new countryinternational students often need to adapt to a new culture of studying and socializing, a new living environment and a new circle of friends.  The benefit of having a mentor to help navigate these changes is invaluable. A mentor can share past experiences, help you become involved in more activities and introduce you to new friends. Mentors can help you have a better transition to the college experience away from home.

If you're wondering how to find a mentor in college, the following suggestions might inspire you to take action.

1. Ask for advice from an international upperclassman: Imagine what you will know about your U.S. College three years from now. You might know every corner of your school, understand which organizations are the strongest on campus or have acquired helpful tips to get great internships.
This is the value that international student upperclassmen can give you as a new student. They know what they could have done if they had had a second chance as a new student. The knowledge they have acquired throughout all these years could be transferred to you.
When you meet international upperclassmen, ask them to tell more about their college experiences share what they do on the weekends or give some thoughts on their previous internships.
If you find a mutual interest and believe you can learn much more from one of these individuals, do not hesitate to keep in touch with that person and probe him or her with more thoughtful questions. Experience is golden.
2. Take help from your professor: Do not be afraid to have a talk with your favourite professor. You will not bother them by asking questions related to your passion for learning. Your favourite professor might already teach many international students just like you. He or she could give you wise advice to help strengthen your academic experiences.

3. Join a mentor program through your college or a student organization: Many student organizations have mentor programs. By joining a student organization, you have a chance to have a mentor or to work with many mentors. Very often, your school may also have cultural organizations where you can find friends who come from the same background as you do. Increase your chances of finding a mentor by joining one or more student organizations.

Your college may also have mentor programs exclusively for new international students. You can simply ask your college adviser or the international students office for more information about these mentor programs and register to have a mentor for your freshman year.

Germany - Favourite Hotspot for Engineering

Engineering is one of the hot courses in Germany. High quality of education and low education costs are one of the biggest lures for students to go to Germany.

Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. ~Will Durant

Engineering students in India who do not opt to do MBA right after engineering or even after two or three years of work experience, invariably are the ones aspiring to go to Germany for their postgraduate engineering programmes. The intensive research work, invaluable study abroad experience, high quality education, career and migration possibilities, and low cost studies are just some of the lures for studying engineering in Germany.

World University Rankings 2014 are a testimony to the high quality of education and other student services offered by educational institutions across the world. See where German Universities stand amongst the world's best educational institutions in different engineering streams:

Computer Science Engineering
  • Technische Universität München is amongst the Top 50
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, and Technische Universität Berlin  are amongst the Top 100
  • Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Technische Universität Darmstadt, and Universität Stuttgart are amongst the Top 150
  • Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg is amongst the Top 200
  • IIT Bombay, Delhi, and Kanpur made it to the Top 100 in World University Rankings for the subject. Indian Institute of Science, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras also made it to the Top 150 for the subject.

Chemical Engineering
  • Technische Universität München is amongst the Top 50
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Technische Universität Berlin, and Universität Stuttgart  are amongst the Top 100
  • Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is amongst the Top 200
  • IIT Bombay made it to the Top 50 for the subject. IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Madras as well as Indian Institute of Science ranked among Top 100 in World University Rankings for the subject. IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee got placed in the Top 150 for the subject.

Civil Engineering
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie is amongst the Top 50
  • Leibniz Universität Hannover, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Technische Universität München, and Universität Stuttgart are amongst the Top 100
  • Technische Universität Dresden is amongst the Top 150
  • Ruhr-Universität Bochum is amongst the Top 200
  • IIT Bombay made it to Top 30 in the list while IIT Kanpur is amongst the Top 50. Indian Institute of Science, IIT Delhi, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee are amongst the Top 100. IIT Guwahati made it to the Top 200 too.

Electrical Engineering
  • Technische Universität Berlin, and Technische Universität München rank in the Top 50
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, and Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen are amongst the Top 100
  • Universität Stuttgart is amongst the Top 150
  • Technische Universität Dresden is amongst the Top 200 IIT Delhi made it to the Top 30 in the list while IIT Bombay is amongst the Top 50. Indian Institute of Science, IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Madras are amongst the Top 100. IIT Roorkee made it to the Top 200 too.

Mechanical Engineering
  • Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen is amongst the Top 30.
  • Technische Universität München, and Universität Stuttgart are amongst the Top 50
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Technische Universität Berlin, and Technische Universität Darmstadt are in the Top 100
  • Technische Universität Dresden, and Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg  are amongst the Top 150
  • Leibniz Universität Hannover is amongst the Top 200
  • Indian Institute of Science, and IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, and Madras are amongst the Top 100. IIT Kharagpur is amongst the Top 150. IIT Guwahati, and University of Delhi are included in the Top 200.

Noticeably, while Indian institutes have a standing of their own in all other engineering streams, Germany has an upper hand in Mechanical Engineering.
Education costs and living expenses
One of the biggest brownie point for Germany is that the fees of international students in the country is same as domestic students there, and this includes students from non-European countries. A large number of universities in Germany are funded by the federal government and do not charge any fee. Some of them may charge a minimal fee of about Rs 34,500 per semester. There are private universities in Germany too, which charge as much as Rs 13.8 lakh per academic year.
Besides tuition fee, students also have to pay a semester contribution fee of around Rs 13,800 per semester, which covers charges for ‘Semesterticket’ usable in all modes of public transport in and around the city.
Living expense in Germany is equivalent to the European average. It may vary according to the city one lives in but on an average, international students in Germany spend around Rs 53,000 euros per month with the major expenditure being accommodation charges.

  • Besides engineering, Germany is also popular for medicine, business, and design programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We have records for both undergraduate as well as post graduate students in various fields and the numbers have been increasing day by day. The proportion of student applications to Germany is higher than those for USA, UK, Canada, or Australia.
  • Indian students aspiring to go to Germany should be more focused on their conceptual as well as language skills and not just the academic scores. They should take initiative to learn different languages. German, for example, is widely spoken not only in Germany but in the entire Europe and has its list of advantages.
  • German education system is more practical-oriented unlike the Indian system which emphasises majorly on theoretical aspects. There are several opportunities available in terms of close industry integrated exposure which is a mandatory part of the syllabus in German Universities – both at the Bachelor’s as well as Master’s levels. This exposure makes students globally acceptable and opens up paths for career progression for them at an early age.
  • Germany welcomes all international students. There is no racism in the country. In general, it is considered safer than India.
